Research Description

Cui-Zu Chang works at the intersection of quantum materials and device physics. His project centers on quantum anomalous Hall materials, in which electrons can propagate along a boundary in a single direction with no scattering. This behavior provides a promising platform for quantum interference and for coupling edge states to superconductors without requiring large applied magnetic fields. To preserve these fragile quantum properties, his team will build devices entirely within a molecular beam epitaxy chamber by combining selective-area growth of the quantum anomalous Hall materials with shadow growth of superconductors. Chang’s group will then fabricate electron interferometers, Josephson junctions, superconducting quantum interference devices, and Majorana interferometers, and measure interference patterns, supercurrent behavior, and conductance oscillations near zero magnetic field.

Research Impact

Chang’s approach could make it easier to build and compare quantum devices without exposing them to processing steps that often damage delicate edge states. If successful, this work could provide a more controlled platform for testing quantum interference, assessing how superconductors couple to quantum anomalous Hall materials, and examining whether proposed signatures of Majorana physics can be measured more clearly near zero magnetic field.
