2025 Experimental Physics Investigator

John Schaibley, Ph.D.

Research Description

John Schaibley is developing synthetic quantum materials using advanced nanofabrication techniques to control electron behavior at the nanoscale. In collaboration with theoretical physicists, his team designs artificial crystals predicted to host exotic quantum states. They pattern features as small as 10 nanometers in atomically thin semiconductor devices and use ultra-low temperature electronic and optical methods to probe the engineered quantum phenomena.

Research Impact

Professor Schaibley’s project has the potential to create a new field of condensed matter physics centered on artificial crystals, enabling physicists to design custom electronic states not found in natural materials. Beyond advancing fundamental physics, this technology could lead to the development of novel quantum devices for computing, communication, and sensing, with broad implications across science and engineering.
