Research Description
Samuel Brewer’s research aims to use highly charged ions to test whether the laws of physics are complete and whether fundamental constants remain fixed over time. His group will build a tabletop system that creates these ions in a compact source, transfers them into a cryogenic ion trap, and pairs them with laser-cooled beryllium ions for cooling and quantum-logic readout. The project will focus on specific ions including argon for tests of quantum electrodynamics, praseodymium for searches related to changes in the fine-structure constant and dark matter, and krypton for isotope shift measurements that could be used to probe possible new forces.
Research Impact
Brewer’s research could help establish highly charged ions as practical tools for precision measurements in a small-scall, low-energy laboratory setting. This work could enable more sensitive tests of fundamental physics and support the development of high-accuracy optical clocks based on these highly charged ions.
