Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science

Founded after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill to study ensuing ecological and health impacts, Public Lab has emerged as a leader supporting and building models for community science and civic participation. Today, Public Lab continues to foster the development of open source, low-cost tools and methods for community-based environmental monitoring and assessment. In response to their innovative work bridging science, science learning, civic engagement, and environmental conservation, Public Lab has earned recognition as a two-time John S. and James L. Knight Foundation News Award and received an Honorable Mention in the 2013 Buckminster Fuller Institute Challenge.
