Founded in 1971 by the California Nurses Association, the California Nurses Foundation is dedicated to the support of the professional practice of registered nurses, advancement of science and education for RNs and improvement of the quality of nursing care.

The foundation supports projects, such as the Bay Area Nurse-to-Nurse Program, to train and support nurses in area hospitals. Along with National Nurses United, it sponsors the Registered Nurse Response Network, a project to send nurses and/or equipment to disaster-stricken areas both inside the United States and internationally, where and when they are needed most. This network was formed in 2004 in the aftermath of the South Asia tsunami, when the need for nurses was not being met by traditional disaster relief organizations.
