Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum and research complex, and it also manages numerous research programs and initiatives. The Center for Astrophysics – the world’s largest and most diverse center for study of the Universe – combines the resources and research facilities of the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Observatory staff members led an international collaboration to obtain the first-ever image of a supermassive black hole with the Event Horizon Telescope – a global network of radio dishes that are linked together to form an Earth-sized telescope. The foundation funded the state-of-the-art data system that made it possible to construct the highest-resolution image of any astronomical object.
