Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
We seek and coordinate with individuals and organizations that have good ideas and the ability to execute. The success of our strategies hinges on capable grantees and we work closely with them as respected experts in their fields.
The Woodwell Climate Research Center was founded in 1985 (as the Woods Hole Research Center) to address global environmental problems through research, policy engagement, and education. Based in Falmouth, MA, Woodwell Climate scientists work with a global network of partners to advance scientific discovery and drive science-based strategies for combatting climate change. Center research focuses on the interaction of climate, soils, water, and living systems, with special emphasis on forests. Projects include the effects of fire, deforestation, and land-use change in the tropical forests of Brazil and Central Africa, the boreal forest of Siberia, and the temperate forests of New England. Using satellite imagery, the Center’s remote sensing lab creates computer-generated maps to monitor the earth’s vegetation. The center created the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development.
