Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
In 1958, Arizona State College became Arizona State University through a statewide referendum approved by the voters. Today, the institution is developing a new model for the American research university, transforming its approach to higher education. Through a deliberate design process started in the mid- 1990s, the entire curriculum, organizational structure and operations have been reconstituted to build a stronger 21st-century institution. The new Arizona State University framework expresses a commitment to knowledge discovery and dissemination, broad socioeconomic inclusiveness and societal impact that values social equity, transdisciplinary approaches and partnership. Six university campuses host classes and research, and more than 90 degrees and certificates are offered online. Annual enrollment has grown to more than 82,000 students, with half of the 2014 freshman class receiving academic scholarships based solely on high school academic excellence.
