Research Description

Dr. Ved Chirayath’s invention, active fluid lensing, is designed to characterize marine systems from the air, specifically benthic surfaces and marine wildlife at the cm-scale and larger, using active UV reflectance and fluorescence. Owing to the unique active MiDAR transmitter, this instrument will be capable of imaging and mapping for longer than diurnal sensors. Active fluid lensing has immediate applications to marine ecosystem imaging, marine wildlife, marine debris and plastic detection, underwater optical communications, and planetary science. Most recently, fluid lensing was demonstrated to image whales underwater, a crucial advance for early warning prevention of whale strikes by shipping vessels.
