The California Institute of Technology, or Caltech, was established in 1891 and is a private research university located in Pasadena, California. Frequently cited as one of the world’s best universities, Caltech’s mission is to expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education.
Caltech has six academic divisions with strong emphasis on science and engineering. In addition to undergraduate studies, the university offers top graduate programs in engineering, biology, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, mathematics and physics. Caltech participates in a significant amount of research, receiving grants from institutions such as NASA, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Health and Human Services, among others.
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded numerous grants to Caltech ranging from supporting an undergraduate team’s participation in the Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, to supporting the development of methods to study microbial sulfur cycles, to analyzing earthquakes in Southern California.
