There is no question that providing patient’s with tools to access their own health information is valuable. In fact, there is increasing support for providing tools that can allow for more participation in an individual’s care so that experiences and outcomes can be better. This is especially important when in the hospital, and not just for the patient but also the family members and every member of the medical team.
Over the past year, we supported four academic medical centers in creating and implementing patient portals in the ICU. Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine and University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. Each hospital is at a different stage with development and deployment of its patient portal. Last August, Brigham and Women’s Hospital shared preliminary findings for the implementation of its patient portal in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.
All four centers are working together to share the lessons they have learned at an upcoming workshop titled “Acute Care Patient Portals 2020: Opportunities and Challenges for Development, Implementation and Innovation.” The workshop, scheduled for June 6, is geared towards other early adopters of patient portals in the inpatient setting and is an opportunity for all participants to share their experiences. The goals of the workshop include:
- Outlining opportunities and challenges for inpatient engagement using technology
- Demonstrating how acute care patient portals can be optimally integrated and leveraged within today’s electronic health records
- Discussing how to validate, evolve and implement best practices over the next five years
The upcoming workshop is intended for individuals and organizations who have experience in implementing and using patient portals, such as chief medical and nursing officers, chief information technology officers, EHR creators, patient advocacy leaders, family advisory council members and HIT and informatics specialists and policymakers.
