Founded in 1864 as Alameda County Infirmary, the Alameda Health System has a legacy of commitment to the community. Now structured as a public health authority, its mission is to promote wellness and eliminate health disparities within the diverse communities of Alameda County, California.

More than 1,100 physicians work across nine facilities, which include two community--based hospitals, an acute rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility, a psychiatric hospital, a network of four neighborhood community care centers and the flagship Highland Hospital, which is known for its trauma and emergency care.

Interpreter services are available in 26 languages, reflecting the demographic diversity of the community. Additionally, as a teaching institution affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, the system trains emergency medicine specialists, surgeons and internal medicine physicians through highly competitive residency programs. Clinical research and continuous quality improvement efforts aim to improve safety, quality of care and patient health outcomes.
