Collaboration in a post-pandemic world

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to share our 2022 annual report, released in conjunction with our audited financial reports for the year.

In 2022, the world emerged from the challenging era of COVID-19 and explored the benefits of hybrid working models. Throughout the pandemic, many of us found remote work could be both effective and satisfying. As conditions allowed, integrating in-person activities enabled us to make purposeful choices on how to best accomplish our work.

Bringing together our grantees and partners facilitates collaboration, sparks new ideas, and promotes social interaction. Working alone allows for uninterrupted concentration, and everyone benefits from flexibility in the workday.

The stories in this report illustrate how perseverance during the pandemic and creative collaboration enabled positive change and lasting impact. These highlights demonstrate just some of the ways we, along with countless other organizations, rediscovered the value of pooling collective strengths to achieve shared goals.

2022 Highlights

Andes-Amazon Initiative: A new chapter

We announced a $300 million extension of our Andes Amazon Initiative through 2031, focusing on preserving Earth's largest remaining rainforest. The initiative, which has been active since 2003, aims to protect Indigenous lands, freshwater and forest ecosystems, and address habitat change drivers in the Amazon region.

Shining a spotlight on the boundaries of life

In 2022, an international team of scientists announced the discovery of Ca. Thiomargarita magnifica, the largest species of bacteria ever identified. This challenged the conventional understanding of bacterial cells and showcased the importance of supporting innovative research, and our funding of exploratory research continues to support scientists as they pursue high-risk, high-reward projects.

The future of diagnostic excellence: Generating knowledge for quality care

Preventable diagnostic errors are still prevalent in health care. Improving diagnostic performance will help increase patient safety, and our Diagnostic Excellence Initiative is actively working to enhance the diagnostic process by measuring performance growing the field and assessing new technologies. We partnered with the Journal of the American Medical Association to publish a series of articles from various healthcare leaders, aiming to spread knowledge about diagnostic errors to drive improvements in patient outcomes.

Bay Area museums emerge from the pandemic with a renewed focus

The COVID-19 pandemic forced museums across the Bay Area to close their doors, and they responded by pivoting to provide engaging educational content online while using the closure period to enhance strategic planning and develop new exhibits, reopening with virtual experiences alongside in-person ones. Institutions like the Lawrence Hall of Science, Exploratorium, The Tech Interactive, Computer History Museum, and Chabot Space and Science Center have all worked to maintain engagement and accessibility, and we continue to support their evolution.

From isolation to integration

Each year, we learn from our grantees and partners in new ways. In 2022, collaboration took varied forms. Whether remote or in-person, bringing people together helps to create opportunities to share our expertise, expand knowledge and learn from one another.

During the last year, we unified management across all our program areas. That integration is helping to foster collaboration, efficiency, optimization, and adaptability. By leveraging the collective strengths and capabilities in the fields of environmental conservation, science, patient care, and in the Bay Area region, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
