Balancing consistency and chance

 

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to share our 2021 annual report, released in conjunction with our audited financial reports for the year.

Stepping back to reflect on our work as the world prepares for a post-pandemic world reveals a duality of continuity and change. Though superficially in tension, achieving the right balance between the two has been critical.

Throughout the pandemic, our staff and grantees have responded to the exigencies of the day, while maintaining a focus on long-term goals. Together they made thoughtful and intentional decisions in the face of uncertainty.

The stories in this report illustrate how flexibility and adaptation can contribute to lasting change for good. They only partially reveal the accomplishments of our grantees during what will be remembered as an especially challenging and uncertain year.

2021 Highlights

Identifying investigators to advance the frontier of experimental physics

A new $190.5 million eleven-year Experimental Physics Investigators Initiative aims to support 120 mid-career scientists to make extraordinary contributions to the field of experimental physics. During this stage of their career many scientists could be at their most productive if they did not have to increase the amount of time they spend applying for grants. This initiative aims to support these scientists at this career stage when they have the skills, team, and ideas to advance the frontier of experimental physics most rapidly.

Diversity, equity and inclusion principles

In 2021, foundation staff and trustees collaborated to define our principles on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We did so because it is our civic responsibility; because they contribute materially to the success of our grantmaking; because they enable every member of our organization to do their best work; and because appreciating a variety of cultures, perspectives, and identities enriches our lives and work. We believe attention to these principles can be instrumental to achieving our desired outcomes.

Environmental Conservation Environmental Conservation

Nature-based solutions and knowledge sharing help address the growing dangers of climate change

By focusing on science- and nature-based solutions such as establishing protected areas and decoupling environmental degradation from food production, the foundation and our key partners the world over are taking steps to ensure sustainable and productive ecosystems are preserved for future generations. For example, our Conservation and Markets Initiative has helped to fund projects such as a risk-assessment tool for insurance companies to address illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing by identifying a vessel’s IUU fishing risk, as well as a report that tracks the relationship between the rising demand for food and agricultural products and deforestation; painting a picture of increasing demands on tropical forest landscapes.

Learning from the pandemic – Experimentation and new opportunities for science learning

The COVID-19 pandemic shuttered schools and museums, but also created opportunities for educators to develop innovative ways to engage with their audiences in an online world. Our Curiosity-Driven Science Initiative grantees created a variety of engaging experiences, from interactive simulations and educational materials to virtual field trips. These immersive and accessible activities have the potential to to transform science education by combining the virtues of interactive in-person experiences with scaling capabilities offered through technology, lowering barriers to entry and bringing science to more people.

Betty Irene Moore fellows in nursing leadership help propel the health care industry amid continued challenges

Recent events have put a spotlight on modern health care delivery, and by necessity the role of nurses continues to evolve. Nurses are influential thought partners and innovators in the health care system, and the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators helps further the development of the next generation of leaders in the field. Since 2019, the fellows have been provided with awards and professional development opportunities that prime them to advance nursing science over the next several years, shaping the future of the profession and improving the quality of health care for all.

Fitzsimmons Ranch is an important piece to preserving wildlife and open space

Core to our mission is a commitment to preserve the special character of the Bay Area. By preserving areas such as Fitzsimmons Ranch, an area important for wildlife connectivity and freshwater provision, we realize benefits to the broader ecosystem of the area. Through a partnership with Sonoma Land Trust and other local stakeholders, the Moore Foundation has supported efforts to ensure that Fitzsimmons Ranch is preserved so future generations of visitors and wildlife can benefit from this important land corridor.

Embracing uncertainty

 

Gordon and Betty Moore established this foundation to create positive outcomes for future generations. It is our obligation always to imagine how to create a better future. During 2021 while so much in the world felt uncertain, we recognized the world had changed and we no longer expected things to return to “the way things were.”

In times of change and uncertainty, we can choose to pause and wait for things to return to normal; or we can make the choice to embrace change and take steps to shape the future.

We applaud all those who made the choice to adapt and begin to imagine a better future.
