In late May, the Government of Bolivia announced a new initiative in Madidi National Park--the 18-month scientific expedition with the Wildlife Conservation Society, supported in part by the Moore Foundation, will begin in the high Andes mountains and extend into the depths of the rainforest.

It's been called the most biodiverse protected area in the world, and an expedition launching this week into Bolivia's Madidi National Park should help put some parameters on that statement.

The expedition -- Identidad Madidi -- is being supported by the Government of Bolivia, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and a number of Bolivian research and conservation organizations. The goal is to "describe still unknown species and to showcase the wonders of Bolivia’s extraordinary natural heritage at home and abroad," according to the Wildlife Conservation Society…
