Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
West Coast Aquatic is a nonprofit organization focused on building partnerships that affect the health and wealth of the west coast of Vancouver Island, one of the most diverse aquatic ecosystems in the world. In 2001, the organization became the first integrated ecosystem body recognized under Canada’s Oceans Act (1996). West Coast Aquatic’s purpose is to provide a forum for coastal communities and other bodies to work more closely with governments to implement an ecosystem approach to aquatic resource management.
West Coast Aquatic partners with a variety of groups—government, First Nations, nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions and businesses—in its programs and projects. These include marine spatial planning, a stewardship center on Port Alberni’s Harbor Quay, the Barkley Alberni Salmon Initiative, a coastal ocean management plan, marine atlas of Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds and a social ecological assessment of the area.
Our work with West Coast Aquatic includes support for the implementation of an ocean plan and marine spatial plan for the west coast of Vancouver Island.
