Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Based in Smithers, British Columbia, the Northwest Institute for Bioregional Research Society has been working toward social and ecological sustainability in northwest British Columbia since 1996.
This Canadian nonprofit organization emerged from a coalition of northwest First Nations and environmental leaders in British Columbia. These groups have a long-standing history of working together, and the institute represents a step toward a more proactive role in identifying values and supporting resource use that is ecologically sound and supports the local community.
The institute members seek to undertake research and publication of educational information about conservation and environmentally sound, sustainable uses of natural resources. They aim to promote cooperation within and among communities in the region, including First Nations and others interested in resources that protect biological diversity and support sustainable communities. In addition, the institute initiates model projects in the fields of education and conservation that demonstrate these objectives.
