Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Founded in 1980 by a coalition of environmentalists and ranchers, the Marin Agricultural Land Trust works to ensure a thriving agricultural community and diverse natural environment in Marin County, California. Since its inception, the organization has worked with dozens of farming families and local landowners to preserve nearly 50,000 acres of land. Through conservation easements, land stewardship and events and outreach, the trust is permanently protecting Marin’s ranch and farming lands.
The trust works with local landowners to preserve land value by conducting annual monitoring visits and helping famers plan and secure funding for land management and improvements. The trust also promotes public awareness of farming and food issues and advocates for policies that support agriculture at the local, regional and national levels. It hosts events for the public to encourage engagement with the county’s family-owned farms, ranches and local landscape. An audio driving tour, narrated by Peter Coyote, takes visitors along a 21-mile route with stories of local history from the Coastal Miwok to present-day ranchers carrying on their family farming traditions.
