Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
As a self-supporting, nonprofit association, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center is dedicated to effecting the conservation of aquatic life through display and interpretation, education, research and direct action. Located in Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada’s first aquarium has welcomed over 35 million people since its opening in 1956.
With over 50,000 animals from across the world, the aquarium is the largest in Canada. The aquarium also conducts groundbreaking marine research and supports conservation initiatives to help protect the marine world including field research and the collection of data about wild populations. Research is also conducted at aquarium labs and with display animals.
Educational efforts include the development of curriculum-based resources to support aquarium field trips and to accompany its Ocean Wise and Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup programs. The aquarium also offers professional development opportunities for teachers and teachers in training.
