Located in Portland’s Pearl District, Ecotrust is an engine for new ideas, technologies, capital instruments and networks to drive social, economic and environmental change. Formed in 1991 to work with a group of Haisla elders and local partners on a campaign to save 800,000 acres of coastal temperate rainforests in British Columbia, Canada, Ecotrust has expanded its focus to conservation and economic development efforts across North America.

Ecotrust’s priority areas include the built environment, climate and energy, fisheries, food and farms, forests and indigenous communities. The organization uses geographic information system analysis, ecosystem evaluation, software development, data collection and economic impact assessment tools to support smart development choices. Its partners include the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, World Wildlife Fund, Surfrider and Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean. Ecotrust’s Community Fisheries Network, for example, helps local fishing organizations across six U.S. states shape sustainable businesses while protecting the marine ecosystem and building economic value for coastal communities.

Our work with Ecotrust ranges from protecting salmon resources in Alaska to supporting tribes with coastal planning.
