George Mason University is the largest public research university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Named for the drafter of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, the precursor to the Bill of Rights, the university was founded as a branch of the University of Virginia in 1957 and became an independent institution in 1972.

George Mason University has three campuses in Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties in Virginia and an international campus in Songdo, Korea. The university also operates a site in Loudoun County and has partnered with the Smithsonian Institution to offer a global conservation studies program at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia.

With 34,000 students from all 50 states and 130 countries, the university is recognized for its programs in economics, law, creative writing, computer science and business. Its 12 schools and colleges offer 208 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs across a broad spectrum of majors.
