Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Located in St. Louis, the Missouri Botanical Garden was founded in 1859 and is the nation’s oldest botanical garden in continuous operation. The 79-acre National Historic Landmark is home to a 14-acre Japanese strolling garden, founder Henry Shaw’s original 1850 home and one of the world’s largest collections of rare and endangered orchids. It hosts nearly a million visitors a year.
With the mission of discovering and sharing knowledge about plants and their environment in order to preserve and enrich life, the Missouri Botanical Garden is a center for botanical research and science education. The organization’s researchers work to strengthen scientific expertise in developing countries to protect and manage biodiversity before it's too late. Its plant conservation work includes species conservation and recovery programs, assessments of the risk status of species and habitat restoration. The focus of education programming is threefold: reconnect people with nature, increase young people’s interest in science and conservation careers and propel the community toward sustainable living.
