The Biology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is located in České Budějovice, the largest city in the South Bohemian region. The center focuses on applied research and education in the biological disciplines. Research activities address ecological themes, with an emphasis on biomedicine, and bring together experts in molecular biology, genetics, taxonomy, field ecology and mathematical modeling.
Founded in 2006, the institution brings together five previously separate scientific laboratories in the areas of soil biology, plant molecular biology, parasitology, hydrobiology and entomology. The Biology Centre offers training for doctoral and undergraduate students in partnership with several universities in the Czech Republic and abroad. It also publishes two journals, European Journal of Entomology and Folia Parasitologica, and organizes several international scientific meetings with hundreds of participants.
