Based in Austin, Texas, NumFOCUS is a nonprofit organization formed in 2012 to promote accessible and reproducible scientific and technical computing.

The mission of NumFOCUS is to promote sustainable high-level programming languages, open code development and reproducible scientific research. This mission is accomplished through educational programs, events and fiscal sponsorship of open source data science projects. NumFOCUS aims to increase collaboration and communication within the scientific computing community.

NumFOCUS provides a critical service as an umbrella organization that removes the burden from the projects themselves to raise money. The organization aims to ensure that money is available to keep projects in the scientific data stack funded and available. Projects supported include: open source data science tools and projects; organization and sponsorship of conferences and events for the open source data science community; scholarships to support professional development opportunities for individual contributors and students; grants to projects to increase sustainability and usability of open source data science tools; and increasing diversity within the scientific computing community.
