Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Manylabs is an open science innovation center located in the SOMA district of San Francisco. Its goal is to incubate and accelerate open science and education projects by providing a lab that supports new technology and tool development and enables inventors to work and connect with one another. The workspace opened in March 2015 in a three story, repurposed industrial building. The ground floor has exhibit and event spaces, the second story is a maker workshop, and the third floor houses an open office.
Staff and interns work alongside scientists, educators and makers selected through a competitive application process for a six-month residency. The teams hold diverse expertise in science, computer science, electronics, education and educational technology. Examples of Manylabs’ open source projects include educational curricula for paper-based circuits, paper microscope development, Arduino-compatible hardware for air quality sensing and a repository of open source biology tools and DIY experiments.
