Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Root Capital is a social investment fund that cultivates rural prosperity in poor, environmentally vulnerable locations by lending capital, delivering financial training and strengthening market connections for farmers and small and growing agricultural businesses.

Since 1999, the organization has distributed approximately $740 million in credit to over 530 businesses in Africa and Latin America. Root Capital’s multinational team hails from a range of professional backgrounds, working out of six offices worldwide.  

Root Capital works in the following key areas: increasing women's participation in the rural economy as a powerful tool for poverty reduction and economic growth; promoting rural economic development by investing in businesses in countries that have recently experienced conflict or disaster through targeted lending; providing financing and training to help farmers to produce more food for local consumption; and providing capital and financial training to businesses that value environmental stewardship to build sustainable livelihoods in Africa and Latin America.
