The Bolsa Verde do Rio de Janeiro, also known as BV Rio, is a Brazilian organization promoting the use of market mechanisms to encourage compliance with environmental laws, support the country’s green economy and drive sustainable development in both the public and business sectors.

BV Rio acts as an environmental stock market that provides and operates a trading platform for environmental assets. The platform became operational in late 2012 and began working in the forestry, solid waste, carbon and wastewater markets. Members of the organization include representatives of the business sector, nongovernmental organizations, academia and citizens engaged in sustainable economic development.

The market model rewards companies who have expertise or comparative advantage for certain environmental activities (e.g., recycling, reforestation and emission reduction) with credits for their service. These credits can then be sold through the trading platform, BV Trade, to those who have a higher cost in realizing environmental obligations.
