Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Founded in 1992, the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (Institute for Ecological Research) is one of the largest nongovernmental organizations in Brazil and works to conduct research on endangered species while involving local communities through education efforts for the ultimate goal of conservation.
Headquartered in Nazaré Paulista, the institute has developed a conservation model that it uses in all its projects. The integrated model includes the research of endangered species, environmental education, restoration of habitats, community involvement with sustainable development, conservation of the landscape and involvement in public policy. Projects range from the research and conservation of lowland tapir in the Atlantic Forest of the Pontal do Paranapanema region to the environmental education of rural communities in Nazaré Paulista. In 2005, the institute also established a School of Environmental Conservation and Sustainability, which offers a professional master’s degree in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
