Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s mission is to reach for new heights and reveal the unknown for the benefit of humankind. With its headquarters in Washington, D.C. which provides overall guidance to the agency, NASA conducts its day-to-day work in the laboratories, air fields, wind tunnels and control rooms of ten field centers and a variety of installations.
NASA conducts its work in the following “mission directorates”: aeronautics, human exploration and operations, science and space technology. Known for its landings on the moon and space shuttle missions, NASA is currently developing new capabilities to send future human missions to an asteroid and Mars while studying the Earth through current and future spacecraft to help answer critical challenges facing our planet. Multiple missions study our sun and the solar system, unraveling mysteries about their origin and evolution. NASA telescopes peer into the farthest reaches of the universe and back to its earliest moments of existence, to help understand the universe's origin, evolution and destiny.
