Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The Malpai Borderlands Group works to implement ecosystem management for nearly one million acres of open space along the Mexican border in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. The area includes the San Bernadino Valley, Peloncillo Mountains, Animas Valley and the Animas Mountains. The group was formed to bring ranchers, scientists and local agencies together to carry out a series of activities that include land restoration, endangered species habitat protection, land conservation and cost-sharing range and ranch improvements.
Since its inception in 1994, the Malpai Borderlands Group has protected thousands of acres of private land and natural wildlife habitat through development restrictions and conservation easements. It has inventoried the region’s rich biodiversity including the most diverse lizard fauna in the United States. It has set aside hundreds of monitoring plots to collect baseline data on the region’s ecology. The organization has also developed a watershed restoration program responsible for constructing thousands of structures to slow down runoff, capture sediment and control erosion.
