Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development was established in 1996 to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the Iwokrama tropical rainforest located in the geographical center of Guyana. The rainforest includes 371,000 hectares of land with half designated as a wilderness preserve and the other half as an experimental area for sustainable development. A timber, tourism and research business generates revenue from the forest and its natural assets, managed through a partnership between the organization and 16 local communities who are also shareholders and participants.
Workshops build local leadership capacity and support for international initiatives that reduce deforestation and degradation in Guyana. Work with local wildlife clubs and primary schools in the North Rupununi region teach environmental stewardship and natural resource conservation. Research is another component of the organization’s work, including baseline data collection to inform forest management planning, biodiversity tracking and forest utilization studies.
