Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Since 1990, Fundacion Gaia Amazonas has worked with indigenous communities of the Northwest Amazon for recognition of their rights, territories and local governance systems Its vision for the future is to support the sustainable management of this region by facilitating and enabling effective and efficient environmental governance systems and putting adequate legal frameworks in place.
Gaia Amazonas’ community-based efforts have enabled 26,000 indigenous people belonging to 100 communities in the Colombian Amazon to establish inter-cultural education and health programs and to exercise local governance over their communities. The organization’s work extends to monitoring threats to natural resources and transboundary initiatives. Recent achievements include the creation of a training center run by indigenous leaders, mapping of the Columbian Amazon and the establishment of a platform that coordinates state and indigenous authorities.
