Founded in 1991, Driftwood Foundation, based in Smithers, British Columbia, sponsors cultural events, conducts research and engages the public in decision-making about recreation and resource planning for the region.

Community programs, such as writer’s retreats, dance labs and art and science installations, draw attention to the unique characteristics of the Bulkley Valley and northwestern British Columbia and raise awareness about conservation and pending development actions. Research activities include developing legal opinions, conducting public polling and understanding habitat characteristics of the local forest and marine ecosystem. The foundation also works with communities to engage them in planning and sustainable development advocacy. Activities range from launching a rural agricultural cooperative to strengthening local connection to wild salmon habitat conservation.
