More than 15 years ago, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil made a groundbreaking pledge to triple the amount of forests under protection in his country’s portion of the Amazon. While that pledge – made with the support and input of the WWF – was a major victory for conservation, it wasn’t enough. Despite a growing understanding of the power of protected areas, their protection remains underfunded.
World Wildlife Magazine recently featured a story about Project Finance for Permanence (PFP), a project created as a long-term and permanent solution to ensuring these areas remain protected in the future. PFP is a comprehensive agreement that allows partners and donors to work together and put resources into action in the most effective way. The Moore Foundation’s Guillermo Castilleja is quoted in the story discussing the benefits of this long-term and transparent solution.
