Moore Foundation grantee Manu Prakash and his invention, the Foldscope, were featured in a New Yorker article that highlights the many uses of the origami $1 microscope. Dr. Prakash's focus is on making tools for ‘frugal science.’ He explains in the article the impetus for the Foldscope: “I found myself at a field station that had a really expensive microscope,” he said. “Everyone was afraid of it. It was worth five times the salary of the person trying to operate it. It just made no sense, out there in the jungle.” A few years later, he and his graduate student Jim Cybulski began running workshops to better understand communities’ needs and how users interact with the foldscope. Now, Manu and Jim are deep in the process of ramping up their capacity to produce and disseminate Foldscopes around the world.
