Today the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation announced the appointment of Stanford University President John Hennessy to its board of trustees. At the same time Ed Penhoet, who also formerly served as the Foundation’s president, is stepping down from his role on the board.

Hennessy became Stanford University’s 10th president in October 2000. He joined Stanford’s faculty in 1977 and held posts including the inaugural Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, director of the Computer Systems Laboratory, dean of the School of Engineering and provost. A pioneer in computer architecture, Hennessy is the recipient of numerous awards including a 2005 Founders Award from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the 2012 IEEE Medal of Honor.

“John brings experience not only in creating real innovations in the fields of science and engineering, but also in fostering a learning environment. That experience aligns with our organizational goals, and we are delighted to welcome John to the board,” said Steve McCormick, president of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Hennessy joins the board at a time when the Foundation is further defining its strategic focus for grantmaking.

“The Moore Foundation has a reputation for bringing people together and providing support for new ideas that will have a positive and lasting impact for the future,” Hennessy said. “I am proud to join the board, continue this work and support new thinking on these important topics.”

Penhoet, who is stepping down from the board, will continue to serve on the Foundation’s Investment Management Committee and Science Advisory Board. As the first chief program officer for the Foundation’s Science Program, a former president and trustee, Penhoet has shaped many facets of the Foundation’s programs and approach to grantmaking.

“Ed has made a substantial and lasting impact on the Foundation, and I’m glad that we’ll have his continued insights through his advisory roles,” McCormick said.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, established in 2000, seeks to advance environmental conservation, scientific research and patient care.  For more information, please visit www.moore.org
