Try to imagine what the world would look like if human-caused carbon dioxide emissions aren’t curbed. That’s what researchers at Stanford are hoping to show with the Stanford Ocean Acidification experience released today. The experience is a free science education tool that takes users to the bottom of the sea, and fast-forwards to the end of the century, when many coral reefs are predicted to corrode in waters made acidic by the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The software is free and available to anyone with virtual reality gear. The project aims to spread awareness and inspire action by giving participants an in-depth look at the growing issue of ocean acidification.
