With support from the foundation's Wild Salmon Ecosystems Initiative, The Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute has been conducting research to identify the conditions for optimal salmon production in environmentally secure "recirculating aquaculture systems." By adopting these new technologies, systems, and practices, the aquaculture industry has been able to improve sustainability and overcome challenges posed by pathogens found in the environment, a lack of high-quality water resources and strict pollution discharge limits.
