Redwoods Rural Health Center is helping to shape the future health care workforce and to inspire providers to work in rural, underserved areas. With the expansion of MediCal and the opening of Covered California, California's insurance marketplace, many residents now have access to health care; however, this increase in individuals seeking care means that our health care system needs qualified professionals to care for our communities. In partnership with University of California, Davis and North Coast Clinics Network's North Coast Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Redwoods Rural Health Center is hosting physician assistant and nurse practitioner students as they conduct their clinical rotations. Each student spends four weeks working with Redwoods Rural staff and provider teams, putting their clinical skills into practice and learning about the wonderful community of Redway.

The UC Davis physician assistant and nurse practitioner programs are master's-degree programs at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis in Sacramento. The school is the first in the nation where nurse practitioner and physician assistant students learn with each other as well as other health students, including medical and graduate nursing students. The physician assistant and nurse practitioner programs focus on developing providers to deliver care in underserved and rural areas where it's needed most, thus expanding access for a growing population.
