The way that researchers communicate their work has not changed significantly in the last few centuries; academic publishing still relies on journal articles and has not kept up with technological advances, new analytical tools, or the globalization of research. To help address this discrepancy, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has granted Collaborative Knowledge Foundation, or CKF, $1.3M to develop a new open source, modular platform for scholarly knowledge production and academic publishing.

The current format and delivery of journal articles bears a remarkable resemblance to scientific journals from hundreds of years ago. CKF is developing a framework consisting of open source software components that can be assembled and configured to handle many different research communication scenarios (traditional journal articles, books, new open science communication models, workflow sharing and linked outputs). The result will address the lack of modernization through faster, more transparent, better connected and more reproducible research communication.

"I’m thrilled to be supporting this important advance in research communication," said Carly Strasser, science program officer at the Moore Foundation. "This platform is a necessary piece of infrastructure for encouraging innovation in how we share our science."

The Collaborative Knowledge Foundation was established in October 2015 by Kristen Ratan and Adam Hyde with the mission of changing the ways that knowledge is produced and communicated. CKF is focused on building open source technology solutions for academic publishing that foster collaboration, integrity, and speed. CKF is accomplishing its goals by building community with the recognition that transformation of research publishing is only possible by breaking down existing silos and enabling collaboration.
