“The towering bluffs of Tunitas Creek Beach, just south of Half Moon Bay, have piqued my curiosity since I first saw them over 40 years ago. Every time I pass by on Highway 1, I’m eager to get out and explore the mile-long beach below,” describes Walter Moore, president of the Peninsula Open Space Trust.
Unfortunately, in recent years, trespassing, camping and garbage dumping became prevalent on this piece of land. The beach had been privately owned for years, and lacked a safe option for public access. Now, Peninsula Open Space Trust is working to change that.
With support from the foundation, Peninsula Open Space Trust recently acquired 58 acres on the beach's southern end. POST will work closely with San Mateo County officials to manage the visitor flow to the beach, and make it a safe destination for visitors while protecting vulnerable wildlife and natural resources in the area.
We are happy to support our partners at POST in the purchase of this land, helping to maintain the Bay Area’s special character, and conserve natural habitat for future generations.
