The highest award given by the Optical Society of America – the Frederic Ives Medal/Quinn Prize – was awarded to Dr. Margaret Murnane, professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Murnane also runs a lab in JILA, a joint institute of CU Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
For nearly 90 years the Frederic Ives Medal has recognized scientists and researchers for overall distinction in optics. It is the first time the medal has been awarded to a woman. Dr. Murnane was recognized “for pioneering and sustained contributions to ultrafast science ranging from femtosecond lasers to soft x-ray high-harmonic generation to attosecond studies of atoms, molecules, and surfaces,” according to the OSA. The Moore Foundation supports Dr. Murnane’s work to develop novel soft x-ray sources and methods to study quantum materials with high spatial and temporal resolution and with chemical specificity. She is a Moore Investigator in Quantum Materials, part of the Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Systems initiative.
