Forest rangers and Peruvian military are working hard to fight illegal gold mining in the Tambopata reserve, where the foundation's Andes-Amazon Initiative has supported conservation efforts for more than a decade. The region is one of the most biologically diverse places on earth, but has recently been inhabited by an army of miners that have carved a toxic path through the rainforest.

The Peruvian government has established outposts and conducted raids along the Madre de Dios River in the Tambopata Nature Reserve, in the hopes of combating this issue.
