A report was recently published as part of a foundation-supported joint project between the NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center and the Nature Conservancy. The report, published in Progress in Oceanography, suggests ocean temperature will continue to play a major role in where commercially fished marine species find suitable habitat. The findings are important in the overall goal of implementing coastal and marine spatial planning in the Northeast.
The report’s findings indicated that commercially important species will continue to change habitat locations as ocean waters warm two to three times faster than the global average through the end of the century. These changes will directly affect fishing communities, as species currently inhabiting Northeast ports move out of range, and new species move in.
More information on these marine species distribution shifts, including which species are likely to be most affected, is available on Environmental Research Web: Marine species distribution shifts will continue under ocean warming.
