The Moore Foundation’s Community Fund provides support to local nonprofit organizations in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties that would not typically be considered for funding under the Moore Foundation’s four main program areas.

Each year, the Community Fund team selects a theme and works to identify organizations that would benefit from funding. In 2018, the Community Fund supported organizations that provide important services by way of community gardens, food education and food security. The theme recognized a local need for support of food systems that provide safe and equal access to affordable, nutritious food and food that is grown and provided in a way that is environmentally friendly.

Recognizing food insecurity in Silicon Valley

Approximately 17% of children in Santa Clara County are considered food insecure, meaning they do not have daily access to adequate food. One in 10 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties receive assistance from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Organizations like Valley Verde, are helping residents with limited income grow organic vegetables in their own gardens, providing all necessary resources at no cost.

The Community Fund evokes the spirit of giving that underlies the foundation and allows us to be of tangible help to service organizations in our community. We are grateful for the work of our 2018 community fund recipients, and to all others who are helping to ensure everyone has access to healthy food.
