Manu Prakash of Stanford and Victoria Orphan of Caltech are among the 23 recipients of the MacArthur Foundation’s 2016 MacArthur Fellowship grants – or ‘genius’ grants. These grants are meant to give researchers of “exceptional creativity” the flexibility to further pursue their ideas and projects. The foundation is proud to have worked with these highly talented individuals.
Manu Prakash, a physical biologist and inventor, was recognized for applying his expertise in soft-matter physics to illuminate phenomena in biological and physical contexts. His ultimate aim is to invent solutions to difficult problems in global health, science education and ecological surveillance. Prakash is a foundation supported grantee, and the winner of the 2014 SPARK challenge for his invention of the Foldscope, an origami paper-thin $1 microscope.
Victoria Orphan, a Marine Microbiology Initiative Investigator with the foundation, was recognized for her work as a geobiologist. Her research sheds new light on microbial communities in extreme environments and their impact on the cycling of nutrients and energy through oceans.
Other scientists recognized for their work include:
Dianne Newman, Caltech
Subhash Khot, New York University
Rebecca Richards-Kortum, Rice University
