Foundation grantees at University of California, Davis are reaching beyond the lab by studying air pollution for a state agency and researching malaria in Uganda, among other practical endeavors.

The Career Exploration Through Internships program is a new career development and paid internship program at UC Davis in partnership with the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. The program is part of a growing trend of university programs helping doctoral students consider a variety of careers.

UC Davis doctoral student Monica Pombo, who will graduate in June with a degree in pharmacology and toxicology, is gathering information on airborne pollution in Mexico affecting border towns in California.

"It's very empowering and motivating," she said.
