Author John Hemming recently released the first Spanish translation of his 2008 landmark book, Tree of Rivers: The Story of the Amazon. At FIL (Feria Internacional del Libro/ International Book Fair) in Lima, Peru, Hemming read passages from Árbol de Ríos: La Historia del Amazonas, then reflected on his time spent traveling throughout the Amazon – sharing tales of adventures and insights with attendees.

Avecita Chicchón, program director and leader of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Andes-Amazon initiative, attended the July 2022 event.

“The Amazon Basin plays a critical role in the future health and viability of the planet, and understanding the geography and history of the river, forests, and biodiversity is vital,” said Chicchón. “In Arbol de Rios, John covers these topics in depth, with nuance gleaned from his travels through unexplored parts of Amazonia – especially his experiences with Indigenous peoples. This Spanish translation brings John’s research and first-hand accounts to a new audience. And it couldn’t come at a better time.”

We are fortunate to share here, in both English and Spanish, the transcript of John Hemming’s remarks from that evening, which serves as an excellent (if unofficial) introduction to his book, available for purchase online in both Spanish and English.
