Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Through its Andes-Amazon Initiative, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has been supporting the Rainforest Foundation US' work to bolster protected areas and indigenous lands in the Upper Purus region of Peru.
This funding has helped two indigenous communities curb deforestation and continue to fight for the long-term health of their lands and resources. "Community monitors" in the region work closely with government agencies, including The Peruvian National Parks Service (SERNANP), to locate illegal coca fields, measure illegal deforestation and document their findings with the use of technology — smartphone mapping systems and drones.
