If you encountered a mountain lion while hiking, would you be scared? It turns out, so are they. As human presence expands into wild environments, the animals that live there, including pumas, live in constant fear. This fear can ultimately dictate when, where, and what animals eat, what habitats they use and how they communicate with one another. Justine Smith, Ph.D Candidate in Conservation Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is working with the Santa Cruz Puma Project to study the habits of pumas, and how human disturbances are affecting their behavior.
