Moore Foundation plant science investigator Jeffrey Dangl and colleagues at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill are investigating how plants assemble and maintain complex microbial communities.

“What we really wanted to understand was how the plant establishes a mutualistic relationship with microbes that it likes, compared to microbes that it doesn’t like,” says Dangl.

The team's findings show it might be possible to manipulate these microbial communities to increase plant productivity.
